The Challenges We Address

Icon image

Minimal Preparation for the IND Interview

Most LGBTI+ asylum seekers attend their IND interview with little or no preparation. Lawyers often don’t have enough time. A brief meeting with a lawyer isn’t enough to help them articulate their story clearly and confidently.

Difficulty sharing personal and sensitive experiences

Explaining your sexual identity and past experiences - often shaped by secrecy, trauma, or fear - can be extremely difficult. Many asylum seekers struggle to express themselves convincingly, especially in a formal setting with officials and interpreters and officials.

Misunderstandings and Missed Information

Example: Asylum seekers often don’t know what details are important to the IND. Combined with memory gaps and mistrust of authorities, this leads to incomplete or unclear statements - resulting in flawed assessments of their applications.

Our Broader Mission

Advocating for Fair and Expert Asylum Procedures for LGBTI+ Individuals

We believe that every LGBTI+ asylum seeker deserves a fair, thorough and expert assessment of their application. While not every claim will result in a positive outcome - and that is not the goal in itself - every individual must be given a genuine chance to present their case.

Unfortunately, many current procedures fall short. Though not universally flawed, numerous accounts from asylum seekers, volunteers and legal professionals reveal systemic issues: misunderstandings, interviews that lack depth, assessments that misinterpret personal statements and applicants who are unprepared for critical moments in the process.

Without proper support and fair evaluation, many LGBTI+ asylum seekers are denied not just asylum - but the possibility of a safe and dignified life in the Netherlands. Our mission is to change that.
